INGREDIENTS:
4 skinless, boneless chicken breast halves
2 tablespoons butter
2 (10.75 ounce) cans condensed cream of chicken soup
1 onion, finely diced
2 (10 ounce) packages refrigerated biscuit dough, torn into pieces (I've never used the refrigerated dough because I don't usually have it on hand, bisquick dumplings - recipe on box -work just fine - Dione)
DIRECTIONS:
Place the chicken, butter, soup, and onion in a slow cooker, and fill with enough water to cover.
Cover, and cook for 5 to 6 hours on High. About 30 minutes before serving, place the torn biscuit dough in the slow cooker. Cook until the dough is no longer raw in the center.

Chicken and dumplings are like serious comfort food to me. I don't know why because I don't remember eating them very often when I was a kid.
I do have this one sad memory about chicken and dumplings from when I was a kid... I was really excited Mom was making them and I'd gone to my room to do my homework before dinner and fell fast asleep.
I remember that when Dad called me, I woke up with this feeling of fear... I thought he was calling to tell me it was time to get up for school. It felt like I'd been asleep for a long time so I thought I'd slept through the night and missed the chicken and dumplings!
I went racing out to the kitchen and realized I'd actually only been asleep a short while and Dad had been calling me to dinner... Unfortunately I realized that seconds before I fainted in the middle of the kitchen floor and awoke to Dad's face.
Then I got carried to my bed where I stayed because I had the flu or some such thing that prevented me from eating a single dumpling.
And I swear it was probably years before she made chicken and dumplings again. Does anybody feel sorry for me? Anybody?
Whoa, i could Totally Do This recipe. In the 60’s there was a 24-oz can or jar of yummy chicken parts and stuff available that made chicken and dumplings easy. Chuck will remember it better. Probably one night his mom made them eat that swill instead of homemade cooking, poor spoilt baby.
But I’ll use this recipe. I mostly remember Chuck's dumplings. I used to make em out of Bisquick, before he became the Bisquick King. Now he's too busy to cook his Cannon Ball Stew or anything else. It's not like the Donner Party Yet, but...
But yes, I do feel sorry for you, cuz there is no better comfort food than Chicken n Dumplings.
I should cook and have the boys over for Chicken and Dumplings...
Okay this is a totally simple recipe, which I've made several times. Deni (who has yet to appear here on the SISTERS' cookblog) says she uses almost exactly the same recipe but cooks hers in a fryer (just occurred to me that I don't know what a fryer is).
Anyway, just one word of warning: if you happen to have a small crockpot (and when I say small I don't know what that means exactly, I always thought my crockpot was about the same size as the avocado green one Mom always used but maybe it's smaller. I only got it because it was a "free with purchase of…" kinda thing. Never occurred to me that I'd actually be using it to cook one day.) don't go pretendin' you're Betty Crocker and add a bunch of extra stuff like a can of cream of mushroom soup and some vegetables… because then when it comes time to add the dumplings they will actually grow so big that the top of the crockpot will pop up and threaten to fly right off unless you happen to walk by just at exactly the right time to save it and stand there next to the crock pot with a big ol' ladle eating enough of the soup stuff so that the lid will fit again but also so that you're not really hungry when dinnertime comes around but dang that soup stuff was so good you can't wait to try it with the dumplings and then you have another helping just in case you catch the flu and faint before you get any the next time around.
I easily solved the lid problem by getting a much bigger crockpot. Now I can add whatever I want so I can be sure there will be leftovers. Oh and like I said, I always use the bisquick dumplings but I heard if you do use the canned biscuits you should just get the cheapy ones because the big fancy grand ones don't cook as well.
